Author Reuse of SAE Content
Use of Figures, Charts, Graphs, and Excerpts
Authors of SAE technical papers and journal articles may reproduce limited portions of content submitted by that author to SAE in additional publications, provided that:
- Publication occurs 6 months after SAE originally published the material.
- The author created and owned the original content. SAE cannot grant permission to republish content owned by another party.
- The author is a named author of the new publication. Authors cannot grant permission to others to reproduce SAE content.
- The original SAE publication is properly cited in the new work, and © SAE International appears next to any reproduced portions.
Republication requests that follow the guidelines above do not require additional written permission. Any other requests, including use of full technical papers or articles, do require written permission from SAE International. Contact copyright@sae.org with questions.
Use of Full Technical Papers and Journal Articles by Their Authors
- The author accepted manuscript version (such as an unformatted Word file) may be posted in an academic institutional repository 6 months following publication. The full citation of the work, as well as a link to the online version on SAE Mobilus®, must be included. The final, published version of the paper may not be posted.
- The final, published version of a paper cannot be posted online for free access (see Open Access exception below). This includes sites such as ResearchGate.
- Papers cannot be shared at trade shows, in marketing emails, with customers, prospects, or distributed in any other manner without written permission from SAE.
- Papers cannot be offered for sale or submitted to another publisher for publication.
- Papers cannot be used in a way that implies endorsement by SAE.
Two options are available to enable distribution of the full paper or article:
- Converting the paper to Open Access (see Open Access Policy). This will allow the author(s) and others to post, share, and reuse the paper under a Creative Commons license such as CC BY.
- A special distribution license agreement can be purchased for a specific person or organization to post and/or distribute a paper, without allowing others to do so.
