One step closer to welcoming Iceland 🇮🇸 as our 42nd Member State! 👉 This week saw Icelandic Minister of Infrastructure Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson sign alongside EUROCONTROL DG Raúl Medina the 1997 Protocol consolidating the EUROCONTROL International Convention relating to Cooperation for the Safety of Air Navigation, and the 2002 Protocol on EU accession to the revised Convention. This was an important milestone 📍 on the path for Iceland to join the EUROCONTROL Organisation, which is envisaged for January 2025, and brings us one step further to integrating Iceland into the European aviation network ✈️. Integrating Iceland & its airspace fully into the European aviation network offers many operational and strategical benefits, and builds on our longstanding partnership 🤝, with the State signing a Transitional Agreement in September 2022 & already participating for some years in our decision-making & working groups as an observer. #networkmanagement #flying #iceland

CEO of #RigaAirport Laila Odina, attending today Aviation-Event 2023 discussion “The challenges and opportunities of new emerging markets of Central Eastern European aviation” with Jesús Caballero Pinto, CEO, Sofia Airport, David Ciceo, CEO, Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport, Eldin Dobardžić, Chair of the Board of Directors, Airports of Montenegro underlined: “The Baltic countries have a lot in common with the Balkan countries in the field of aviation: history, aviation restructuring in the nineties of the last century, when the old carriers disappeared and new ones appeared. Latvia's benefit and success from these changes was the national airline "airBaltic", which today is the most important player in our region. At the moment connectivity of these regions is expanding, discovering more and more new routes from the Baltic main Riga Airport to the Balkans. These new destinations strengthen the Riga Airport as a hub of the region and help to replace markets of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus lost due to the war.” #aviation #travel #development #cooperation #baltics #balkans

During #NATO #Summit there are planned some traffic restrictions. Lithuanian Airports share detailed plan how #Vilnius #airport can be reached at this period. Passengers who have tickets for #flights before the closure of the airspace to commercial aircraft will be able to get to both the airport terminals and the car park by driving along Darius and Girėnas, F. Vaitkaus streets. However, it is stressed that traffic may be impeded during some periods due to additional security measures. Private vehicles will not be allowed on Vikingų, Oreivių and A. Gustaičio streets (past the IKEA store and Nordika supermarket). Passengers planning to travel to #Vilnius #airport during the NATO event are advised to use the city's public transport, which will be free of charge. In addition, the Vilnius-Vilnius Airport train route will be specially upgraded by LTG Link from 10-13 July. Between 24 and 36 daily round-trip train services are planned for these days. We apologies for any inconvenience. For more information visit: https://lnkd.in/ewUQMKSR (LT) https://lnkd.in/epna76Sh (EN) #Lithuanianairports #NATOsummit

⛴ 🛩 Why does #Maritime and #Aeronautical Communication Matter? 🌍 When you travel in #Africa, it's comforting to know that your airplane can land safely without any signal interference. Similarly, if you embark on a boat cruise, it's reassuring to rely on communication systems for emergency assistance. 🇸🇳 This week, the International Telecommunication Union organised a workshop in Dakar. The training aimed to enhance the capacity of #telecommunications #regulators on these crucial topics. The #ITU plays a vital role in #safeguarding the frequency bands used by vessels and airplanes to navigate safely and maintain reliable communication. 📡 By providing recommendations, regulations, and databases, the ITU supports seafarers in their duties, ensuring efficient and secure maritime and aeronautical communication. 📶

Here in Switzerland, the discussion about the possible future institutional framework agreement between Switzerland and EU has gained traction. For aviation, the bilateral air transport agreement between Switzerland and the EU with its acquis communautaire is very important. I published a reply to an article of Carl Baudenbacher in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung NZZ of February 28, 2024, highlighting the improvements the discussed agreement may bring regarding the dispute settlement mechanism and the role of the ECJ.
