It's a scary fact that highlights the environmental impact of our online activities. I recently came across a fantastic website that has taken steps towards a more sustainable internet. They've created the first-ever methodology for estimating the carbon emissions linked to a website. 🌍 The tool they've developed is not only groundbreaking but also freely accessible to anyone. What's the digital and water footprint of your organisation? It's a topic that Women in Sustainability Network covered yesterday in a webinar with Marketa Benisek from Wholegrain Digital. I knew about fossil fuel carbon but had no idea how much water the internet consumes (to keep cool). Here are just some of my action-points as a result of the webinar (most of these are really easy so don't be put off): - use a virtual background on Zoom and turn off camera when watching webinar content - calculate the carbon of my key web pages using https://lnkd.in/e_5FruAi - ditch the short reply emails that are unnecessary and cost carbon - delete unwanted emails (categorising emails as FROM helps to delete several in one go) - delete old web pages - delete files I no longer need - change the resolution of my website photos and investigate WEBP and AVIF file types instead of JPEG - use photos and play buttons for embedded videos - create a short email signature for follow-up emails - use more links rather than attachments in emails Thanks Rhian Sherrington FRSA, Founder / Head Coach for bringing such valuable content to your WINS members. #sustsainability #digitalfootprint #carbonemissions

Just attended a fantastically insightful Masterclass on Digital Sustainability given by Marketa Benisek at Wholegrain Digital for the Women in Sustainability Network members. Honestly it's a whole degree course of stuff but an amazing summary and although I'm quite well-informed I was scribbling down things to do, investigate or even un-do all the way through! For a start, if you are a service oriented organisation this may be a major part of your negative impact and even if it's in the cloud, your data is not free- where it is stored, how it gets to you and how much of it there is all involves energy and hardware and complex networks, contributes to the mushrooming data-bloat of the online world and therefore to global carbon emissions.
