Programming Director, VidCon | Creator Economy Enthusiast ⭐ | Live Events Specialist 🥇 | Building The Best Fan Experiences 🔥
Be the dumbest person in the room! It's a phrase I've heard said a lot of times before. But is something that I’ve recently been embracing..... .....And it's very underrated!! I have a genuine love and curiosity for all things Creator Economy. And I spend A LOT of time reading, researching, and building my own thoughts and perspectives. Over the last few months, we’ve been hosting our VidCon advisory board meetings (shoutout to Lisa Milgram for doing a great job 🙌)...... Hosting these meetings really gets me excited and never gets old for me…. And I spend the majority of the time just listening!! ...Not saying a word. Why? Because, honestly, I feel like the dumbest person in the r(z)oom. And I love it! Listening to some of the industry's most knowledgeable people talk and discuss, all things Creator Economy is awesome! I LOVE being a part of all the different perspectives and expertise coming together in an amazing closed-door discussion. Anyway, the moral of the story: 1️⃣ You’re never too much of 'an expert' to learn! 2️⃣ Being silent isn’t a weakness. 3️⃣ Surround yourself with SUPER smart and inspiring humans. 4️⃣ Be the dumbest person in the room! It may sound cliche, but these 4 things will very quickly level up your knowledge and give you a huge amount of perspective. It’s a silent advantage! Huge shoutout to our amazing advisory board! I honestly appreciate everything you guys bring to VidCon and me personally! ⭐ P.S. BONUS POINT: 5️⃣ Be a nice person! #creatoreconomy #socialmedia #vidcon #advisoryboard #vidconanaheim #vidcon2024 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hey 👋, I'm Jacques, I write about all things Creator Economy and Events. ❤️ Liked this post? I spent last week at KubeCon NA in Chicago and it was a fantastic time. Other than watching a few keynotes, I didn't catch too many sessions, but instead spent most of my time in the booth talking to people. Conversations ranged from careers at Microsoft, to in-depth AKS/K8S networking. I also got a chance to finally meet many of the AKS PMs in person. It was refreshing, and a great relief, that people like Jorge Palma, Cécile Robert-Michon and Pavneet Singh were still willing to talk to me after the 2+ years of relentless pestering that I've inflicted upon them. Here are two of the biggest takeaways that have stuck with me since leaving the conference... 1.) K8S is still way too hard to operationalize for the average customer. To me, the proof of this is in the number of vendors/booths that were there on the showcase floor. I'm guessing there were 400+ products/companies there all pitching their wares. To me, that is representative of a platform that still has a long way to go in terms of solving problems in a seamless way. We shouldn't need that many options or 3rd-party tools to use the platform. We all need to get better and figure out how to make the platform work better out-of-the-box. 2.) Brendan Burns must be about the most humble person in tech. Here's a genius who sits at the center of the K8S movement, and he's in the booth talking to people and scanning badges just like the rest of us ordinary Joes. I bet that half the people there didn't even realize who they were talking to. Honestly, this will stick with me beyond anything else from that week.

I held a meeting today with a large public company I’ve been trying to close a deal with for months — and said almost nothing the entire time. Today also marks one year since I started at Thena (Thanks Sukriti for the shoutout). I took a big risk when I joined Thena, which at the time was pre-seed with a handful of paying customers and a basic MVP. I was hoping some of Mike Molinet might rub off on me and that maybe if I helped build a new and exciting technology it would open some interesting doors. Exactly a year - and well over 100 new customers - later, I’m in a big glass conference room with Mike and a founding member of the tech behemoth we’re hoping to sign, both of whom built unicorns from scratch. It started out like most meetings - open items, next steps etc. But quickly turned into a nostalgia session as they started exchanging stories about the early days of their companies. Listening to them casually reminisce about the struggles, the mistakes, lessons learned and the climb to the top, I couldn’t help but shut up and smile. People pay good money to travel to conferences across the world to hear these two speak, and here I was, front row, listening to them joke about HTML5 and nonchalantly drop wisdom that many current and future CEOs would kill to hear. I spent the hour sitting silently, contributing nothing — the worst sales meeting of my life and my favorite one so far. Moral? Take the leap (and know when to shut up).

Winding down from two days of SaaSOpen (Next: Sept 5th, NYC) in Austin where I closed out the event with my keynote, few initial thoughts: 1. Austin is awesome. Love it everytime I visit. 2. There isn’t a SaaS event I’ve been to with such a high density of founder/CEO’s 3. The appetite for founders at this conference to be open, honest, help, support and connect is refreshing and great to witness. People REALLY care about helping each other. 4. So many founders have challenges they’re struggling to unlock on their own. SO MANY. How can I/we do more? 5. Spent time with dealpad.io customers and remind me how fortunate we are to have such incredible supporters My talk centered on why founders are the best sellers in their company and I shared some hacks I’ve personally used to drive growth. I’ll share the talk recording when it’s ready. Key takeaway: let’s help each other succeed, more.
