This year, we’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of our Open Access (OA) Books Program! Our OA books are more likely than non-OA books to be mentioned in the news, and have on average more than twice as many citations in research and policy documents. This demonstrates that choosing OA is the perfect way for researchers to maximize the reach and impact of their work. We caught up with 12 Taylor & Francis colleagues and asked them to recommend their must-read OA book from our collection. At Taylor & Francis, we’re committed to fostering human progress through knowledge, and we aim to promote a positive future for everyone through our work. This includes community involvement through corporate fundraising, charity partnerships, equipment donations, and volunteering. Each Taylor & Francis employee is given four paid days a year to volunteer at the organization of their choice. Our colleague AnnaMary Goodall recently shared with us the volunteering work she does: “Through Taylor & Francis Group, I volunteer with Chapter One UK and spend an hour reading online with the same children each week, helping to transform their reading confidence and ability.” Learn more about community involvement at Taylor & Francis: http://spr.ly/6047dBLzW Learn more about Chapter One UK: http://spr.ly/6048dBLzo

Stories are powerful. When we read data, only the language parts of our brains work to decode the meaning. But when we read stories, every part of the brain we’d use if we experienced the story becomes activated as well. We invite you to join us for a webinar next Wednesday, May 15 at 10 am US ET, called: ”Storytelling Strategies for Research Communication Impact.” Your host will be Dr. Kate McDowell, Associate Professor at the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, who advises regional, national, and international nonprofits, including work with WHO on storytelling responses to online health misinformation. McDowell leads the nationally-funded Data Storytelling Toolkit for Librarians, currently in development, to equip public libraries with the narrative tools they need to thrive in the data-driven era. This March, Priya Madina, Vice President of External Affairs and Policy at Taylor & Francis, (in photo) was asked to speak on a panel addressing artificial intelligence at The London Book Fair. In this new Higher Education Policy Institute blog, she delves into the pressing issues that AI imposes on academic publishers like Taylor & Francis, and the broader implications for researchers, editors, and reviewers alike. She explains: “By harnessing the power of AI responsibly: researchers, publishers, and policymakers can foster a more transparent, equitable, and trustworthy research environment. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that these benefits come hand in hand with inherent risks that must be carefully considered.” Read more: http://spr.ly/6045js6pZ Visit our Research Impact Hub for more articles on policy impact: http://spr.ly/6046js6pw

News options have exploded in the last 40 years. While this may give the appearance of more choices for news, researcher Adam Shehata sheds light on how this plethora of choices, combined with the algorithmic nature of social media, have in fact limited what we experience. This has led to audience fragmentation and polarization. Shehata makes recommendations for updating classic theories of news media’s influence over public opinion for the modern day in his open access chapter, ‘Media Effects on Perceptions of Societal Problems,’ from ‘The Routledge Companion to Political Journalism’: http://spr.ly/6041jqcIR #MediaLiteracy #NewsLiteracy

Over half of the world’s population lives in cities, and the World Bank estimates that, by 2050, this proportion will have risen to 70%. Rapid urbanization can lead to risks such as increased social instability, threats to critical infrastructure, and potential shortages of water or other basic needs. This Thursday, May 9th hear two thought leaders, Vincenzo Lapenna of the Italian National Research Council and Eloi Figueiredo of Lusófona University present different perspectives on the ways Geoinformatics tools such as GIS and Remote Sensing can help us create sustainable and resilient cities of the future.
