“Spam” email is a seemingly never-ending nuisance of today's Internet experience. Yet, the term’s origins are much less technical than one would think, inspired by an iconic sketch from the 1970s TV show Monty Python’s Flying Circus. The sketch featured Vikings who loudly and incessantly chanted about Spam, the canned, processed meat, to the point where other conversations were muted. The Vikings’ legacy lived on, and "spam" became synonymous with the frustrating, unsolicited emails that flood our inboxes each day.

Today's increasingly intelligent vehicles are only one piece of the puzzle of advanced transportation systems. Smart roads are equipped with advanced vehicle-sensing capabilities that form the backbone of intelligent transportation systems, laying the groundwork for the widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles. Now, a new approach that leverages a combination of cameras, radars and sensors promises even greater precision while also being more practical to deploy in real-world scenarios.
