As part of the UN Civil Society Conference, taking place in Nairobi, Kenya 🇰🇪 from 9-10 May, the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) is co-sponsoring a workshop session titled "Multistakeholder Internet Governance: Enabling a Sustainable Digital Future", together with the EUI Robert Schuman Centre, the European Union, and the Internet Society Kenya Chapter, in partnership with the Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet). The workshop will gather lessons learned and best practices from the multistakeholder community, and define main priorities for the ongoing #PactfortheFuture and #GlobalDigitalCompact negotiations. It will also consider how the #UN system can more effectively embrace the #multistakeholder model essential for digital and Internet governance, and reflect on how this can contribute to deepening international partnerships in the UN context. The workshop will take place on Day 1 of the Conference from 10:15 - 11:30 local time, in Conference Room 8. As Chair of the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) in 2024, the Kingdom of the Netherlands 🇳🇱 #KingdomNL is hosting a series of multistakeholder regional dialogues, convening government officials, members of the #FOC Advisory Network, and other regional stakeholders, to foster dialogue on digital issues and #humanrights, including the governance of the #Internet and artificial intelligence technologies. To kick-off the regional dialogues, the Netherlands and Ghana 🇬🇭 convened stakeholders from the African continent during the Digital Rights and Inclusion Forum #DRIF24 held in Accra, Ghana from 23-25 April. This was followed by a dialogue with stakeholders based in Latin America, hosted by the Netherlands and Chile 🇨🇱 on the margins of the #NETmundial +10 conference in São Paulo, Brazil on 28 April. The discussions highlighted regional trends and challenges around digital technologies, and explored the role of the Coalition to promote and protect human rights online, in addition to opportunities for enhancing outreach efforts within the respective regions. Participants also shared insights and perspectives on key processes including the #GlobalDigitalCompact and #WSIS +20 Review, reflecting on the FOC’s priorities during this pivotal year for the governance of the Internet and digital technologies, and emphasising the importance of international and multistakeholder cooperation. I had the pleasure of attending the Digital Rights and Inclusion Forum 24 in Accra 🇬🇭 last week. As part of the Dutch 🇳🇱 chairship of the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) we partnered with Ghana to host a regional dialogue and a panel session. The events brought together African stakeholders to discuss their priorities for the Global Digital Compact 🇺🇳 and to enhance outreach efforts. A special thank you to Emmanuella Darkwah for your hospitality and dedication and congratulations to Adeboye Adegoke and the Paradigm Initiative team for orchestrating a truly impactful #DRIF24.

On Monday, 25 March in Geneva, Switzerland, the Kingdom of the Netherlands 🇳🇱, Canada 🇨🇦, the Republic of Kenya 🇰🇪, and the Atlantic Council DFRLab's Democracy + Tech Initiative co-hosted the workshop “Shaping the Future of Internet and Digital Tech Governance in 2024/2025”, the first in a series of stakeholder outreach events on #Internet and digital technology governance processes. The event commenced with capacity building sessions on the Internet governance ecosystem, including a discussion on the history, key themes, stakeholders, and processes, facilitated by Konstantinos Komaitis from the Democracy + Tech Initiative of the Atlantic Council's DFRLab, and a presentation which explored the positions and motivations of key actors, facilitated by Sorina Teleanu from DiploFoundation. Following these sessions, #FOC Member States and Advisory Network representatives engaged in strategic discussions on the Coalition’s shared priorities, exploring how they can be advanced in the upcoming #GlobalDigitalCompact (GDC) negotiations, as well as applied to the broader framework of ongoing discussions on the governance of the Internet and digital technologies, including the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) +20 review process. On Tuesday, 19 March during Day 2 of the #SummitforDemocracy, the co-Chairs of the Freedom Online Coalition (FOC) Task Force on Information Integrity Online, Denmark 🇩🇰, the Netherlands 🇳🇱, and the Wikimedia Foundation, hosted a multistakeholder session titled “Upholding Information Integrity Online to Reinforce #Democracy and #HumanRights.” Peter van der Vliet, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Korea, announced the publication of the #FOC's Joint Statement on Information Integrity Online and Elections (https://lnkd.in/emc9nbVq), and underscored the need for States to strengthen the online information ecosystem and to promote a pro-democratic vision and respect for human rights, and for the tech industry to take the necessary measures to ensure #trustworthiness of their products and services. Session panellists shared regional insights on challenges and opportunities relating to the online information ecosystem, and emphasised the importance of involving civil society stakeholders from diverse backgrounds in initiatives relating to information and election integrity. Looking ahead, participants highlighted the need to continue fostering inclusive discussions to promote a positive vision for the online information ecosystem, and underscored the importance of advancing #connectivity and media literacy worldwide.
