We are Ireland online. We are the registry for .ie domain names, enabling Ireland to thrive online.
About us
.ie is the national registry for .ie domain names and is the trusted and progressive guardian of Ireland’s unique online .ie address. Our purpose is to enable and empower people, communities and businesses across Ireland to thrive online. We operate the domain name system (DNS) for the .ie namespace, facilitate an independent dispute resolution service, and operate a public WHOIS lookup service for .ie domains. In cooperation with our Registrars, technical partners and stakeholders, we help advance Ireland’s internet ecosystem. Good governance is evidenced in our policy development process for the .ie namespace, which follows a bottom-up, consensus-driven approach through a multi-stakeholder Policy Advisory Committee. At .IE we are committed to digital advocacy for SMEs and for local communities. Through stakeholder engagement initiatives such as .IE Digital Town, we work with and support SMEs organisations to improve their members’ online presence and e-commerce capabilities so they can unlock the power of the internet to boost sales to local consumers. We also produce fact-based research for the business community and policymakers, such as the .IE Domain Profile Report and the .IE Tipping Point Report, charting the attitudes to digital of Irish SMEs and consumers during the Covid-19 pandemic. There are over 325,000 .ie domain names registered. Since March 2018, it is easier and faster to register a .ie domain. As part of the domain registration process, every applicant must provide tangible evidence of a connection to Ireland. At .IE we recognise that our employees are the key to our success. We are accredited under Ibec’s KeepWell Mark in recognition of our commitment to the wellbeing of our team, by instilling a best practice approach as the minimum standard to be achieved.

🤔 What can be done to help reduce digital waste? ▪ Perform regular data audits There is no substitute for taking the time to go through your cloud drives, then reviewing and removing any irrelevant or unneeded files. Think of it like cleaning out a virtual filing cabinet and freeing up space. ▪ Create a carbon-neutral website Yes, having an attractive, functional website is a must-have for small businesses, but all the data processing and storage involved in making your website function has an emissions impact. The average website produces 0.8 grams of CO2 per page view. For a website with 10,000 monthly views, that’s 102 kilos of CO2 emissions per year! So, how do you go about creating a carbon neutral website? ▪ Start with slimming down your website’s design Use more efficient impact formats – like SVG, WEBP over bulkier formats like JPG and PNG. Don’t use auto-play video. Instead, host your video on external platforms like Vimeo or YouTube. Focus on making your SEO (search engine optimisation) as strong as possible. This can help you reach and attract the users who are most likely to visit and convert on your site. Keep your overall website design as straightforward an uncluttered as possible. ▪ Switch to a web hosting provider that uses renewable energy. A growing number of providers are now using greener sources – like wind and solar – to power their operations. https://lnkd.in/e8_KRTaf

Earlier this year we helped .ie launch the latest Domain Profile Report 2023, revealing that 48,689 new domains were registered up to 31st December 2023. In addition, the report highlighted the strength of .ie domain cybersecurity as a considerably lower amount of cyber threats were detected on .ie domains vs international players including .com, .eu and .uk Now in its ninth year, the Report is an annual exploration of the .ie database and is published by .ie, the national registry for .ie domain names.
