This year, the Consumer Technology Association’s Digital Patriots Dinner honored iRobot cofounder and former CEO Colin Angle for his career success and longtime work to advance causes that matter for the technology industry, including advocacy against job-killing tariffs and support for STEM education. While Colin’s remarks were inspired and passionate, the story of the company he co-founded and headed for three decades was an indictment of the Biden administration’s approach to regulating business – with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) leading the charge off the cliff.
In his remarks at the dinner, Colin shared his work over decades to create a world-leading robotics company, now most famous for its Roomba robotic vacuums, to “build the robots we were promised as children.” He explained that tariffs (initiated by the Trump administration and continued by the Biden administration) and attacks from the Biden administration on American business undermined iRobot’s ability to compete with Chinese rivals. Facing Chinese manufacturers who benefitted from loose IP enforcement and government support and weighed down by chaotic trade policy from our own government, iRobot signed an acquisition deal with Amazon. Then, disaster struck. In collaboration with our own Federal Trade Commission under Chair Lina Khan, EU antitrust enforcers challenged and stopped the merger, resulting in layoffs of more than 300 employees at iRobot’s Massachusetts HQ. Colin himself is now leaving the company.
I have no doubt that iRobot will continue to fight. For nearly two decades, the company consistently out maneuvered, out innovated and outperformed competitors from across the globe, and has sold more than 50 million Roombas and counting. If Colin is any indication, the people at iRobot are amazing, committed, talented and passionate about changing the world, but they face a huge challenge in competing against Chinese manufactures without the support of the U.S. government. The FTC’s anti-consumer, anti-business approach requires immediate action by Congress or President Biden!
