AI news: OECD has released an update of its AI Principles—a set of guidelines that promote use of AI that is innovative and trustworthy, and that respects human rights and democratic values. First adopted in 2019, the principles guide #AI actors in their efforts to develop trustworthy AI and provide policymakers with recommendations for effective AI policies. Most graduation traditions, like wearing a cap and a gown, come from customs established in European universities during the Middle Ages. But it wasn’t until 1912, at the U.S. Naval Academy, that the custom of tossing graduation caps into the air started. Naval academy graduates were going to be immediately commissioned as officers, so they no longer needed their midshipman’s hats. Because of this, the old hats were thrown into the air after the graduation ceremony, which resulted in a long-standing tradition. To make sure you hear your name loud and clear so you can receive your hard-earned diploma, ASA/ANSI S1.16-2000 (R2024) describes procedures for measuring the performance of noise-discriminating and noise-canceling microphones.
