Jesse Walker, Chair
Enhancements to the IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control layer to provide, as appropriate, mechanisms that enable data integrity, data origin authenticity, replay protection, and data confidentiality for selected IEEE 802.11 management frames including but not limited to: action management frames, deauthentication and disassociation frames.
Achievements
The Task Group completed initiated a Sponsor Ballot recirculation on draft 9.0 on May 8, so there was no business to transact except to schedule ballot resolution meetings. TGw will continue to hold these via telecoms on Wednesdays at 12:00. The first teleconference will be held on May 27, after the recirculation closes on May 23.
Note Draft 8.0 was never balloted and has no standing, as it includes fatal errors that rendered it useless.
July 2009 Goals
Achievements
The Task Group completed resolution of the Sponsor Ballot recirculation on draft 7.0 prior to the March meeting and authorized a recirculation on draft 8.0. However, the resolution adopted for Public Action frames broke the P802.11n coexistence management algorithm, so the recirculation had to be rescinded and resolutions reopened.
In consultation with stakeholders from TGn, TGu, TGv and 802.11y, the Task Group reached the following tentative consensus position on the Public Action frame issue:
– 802.11w should create no problems for 802.11n for unicast Public Action frames, as protection is not required between two STAs for which a security association does not exist. Resolution: clarify the P802.11w draft.
– It is the intent of TGw that broadcast unprotected Management frames with a wildcard BSSID will be received. Resolution: clarify the P802.11w draft.
– The rules for setting the BSSID field of the Public Action frame may require work in TGn. For example, setting it to the transmitters BSSID probably doesn’t work. The rules for receiving and filtering Public Action frames based on the BSSID field need to be clarified. Resolution: TGn to clarify the P802.11n draft
Draft text will be produced and then vetted at the next two conference calls of the Task Group.
May 2009 Goals
Achievements
The Sponsor Ballot recirculation on draft 7.0 closed with a vote of 100 Approve, 12 Disapprove, 9 abstains. This is an improvement from 92-15-9 in the initial Sponsor Ballot on draft 6.0. The recirculation generated 82 comments, down from the 270 generated for draft 6.0.
The main achievements of this meeting were
· Resolved 77 or 82 comments
We did not achieve the goal of completing comment resolution and approving a recirculation of a new draft. Two open issues arose out of draft 7.0:
· Should 802.11w attempt to protect Public Action frames? Do so seems to require a new security model.
· Should 802.11w extend its SA Query process to allow non-AP STAs to initiate?
