ICANN Seeks Feedback on Proposed Top-Level Domain String for Private Use

24 January 2024

Today, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) opened a new Public Comment proceeding.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority has made a provisional determination that ".INTERNAL" should be reserved for private-use and internal network applications. This string was identified according to a previously consulted procedure on implementing SAC113: SSAC Advisory on Private-Use TLDs, produced by the Security and Stability Advisory Committee. ICANN is seeking feedback on whether the identified string meets the requirements of SAC113, or whether there are any other issues with the string that need to be considered prior to its reservation.

About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
