Throughout Climate Week and beyond, Amazon is focused on net-zero carbon by 2040.

What is the Climate Pledge?

Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge in 2019, committing to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. The Pledge now has more than 470 signatories, including Best Buy, IBM, Microsoft, PepsiCo, Siemens, Unilever, Verizon, and Visa.

What is Climate Pledge Friendly?

We launched the Climate Pledge Friendly program to help customers identify products with sustainability features.

Products that are part of the Climate Pledge Friendly program are certified by one (or more) of over 50 sustainability certifications, which include vetted and reputable third-party certifications like Fair Trade Certified, The Forest Stewardship Council, and Energy Star Most Efficient. Amazon also has developed four certifications including Compact by Design, Pre-owned Certified: Electronics, Pre-owned Certified: Fashion and Plant-Based Fiber Blended. Nneka Leiba, Amazon’s Global Lead for Selection Science, helps to identify which certifications should be in the program. “We use a science-based approach that prioritizes the most relevant sustainability and environmental issues related to the entire life cycle of a product. For example, if we’re looking at wood furniture, we want to find a certification that addresses how the wood is sourced and how the product is created,” says Leiba.

7 practical tips for Amazon shoppers this Earth Month and beyond

From recycling boxes to buying pre-owned products, here are a few ways to celebrate Earth Month as an Amazon shopper.

“Cradle to Cradle is a great example of a certification that addresses the entire lifecycle of a product. Its criteria include soil and water quality, climate, chemical safety, circularity, and social fairness.
