DESCRIPTION
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
AIX/ESA enables growth by providing options that support and allow
the UNIX user to exploit the ESA/370 and ESA/390 processor families.
AIX/ESA can operate natively on an ESA/370 or ESA/390 processor, in a
logical partition using Processor Resource/Systems Manager (TM)
(PR/SM (TM)) or as a VM/ESA (TM) or VM/Extended Architecture System
Product (VM/XA (TM) SP) Release 2.1 guest.  AIX/ESA provides a base
for developing and executing applications across an enterprise. It
exploits the facilities of the ESA architecture, such as:
o   High performance single system image
o   Large real and virtual memory
o   Multiprocessing
o   Vector facility
o   Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON (TM)) attachability
o   Expanded storage
o   High Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI).
By adding AIX/ESA on one or more ESA-capable processors in a
UNIX network, customers may use the increased ESA/370 and ESA/390
capabilities for better positioning the enterprise for future
expansion and growth.
AIX/ESA uses the local area and wide area network connections
of several channel-attached nodes to participate in standard
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networks.
These channel-attached nodes include the IBM 3172 Interconnect
Controller Models 1 and 2, IBM RISC System/6000 (TM) workstations,
and HYPERchannel (3)-DX (3) units.
AIX/ESA uses the IBM 3172 for access to the local area
networks supported by the 3172 models.  AIX/ESA uses the
HYPERchannel-DX unit for access to local and wide area networks
supported by the unit.
A RISC System/6000 connected to AIX/ESA via the recently
announced Block Multiplexer Channel Adapter can be used as an
attractive alternative to local area networks to give asynchronous
terminals, modems, and printers access to AIX/ESA.  Since AIX/ESA
uses the RISC System/6000 as an IP gateway node, the AIX/ESA system
also gains TCP/IP connectivity to any local area and wide area
network supported by TCP/IP in the RISC System/6000.  High
performance channel programming techniques, designed to provide
better throughput than the 3088 techniques for the IBM 3172, are used
with the RISC System/6000.
AIX/ESA supports additional TCP/IP connectivity via
channel-to-channel connections to IBM ESA or XA systems running
AIX/ESA or AIX/370.  The connection to an adjacent system can be via
an IBM 3088 Multisystem Channel Communications Unit, a System/370
(TM) Channel to Channel Adapter (CTCA), or a virtual
channel-to-channel link on a supported VM system, depending on the
nature of the configuration.
 (3) HYPERchannel and HYPERchannel-DX are trademarks of the Network
   Systems Corporation.
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
Because the AIX family complies or is compatible with a wide range of
industry standards and specifications, customers can easily develop
applications that can be ported across different processor platforms.
AIX/ESA is initially designed to comply or be compatible with the
following standards and specifications:
o   Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standard
1003.1 -- 1988 Portable Operating System Interface for Computer
    Environments (POSIX.1)
o   American National Standard Institute (ANSI) X3.159-1989,
Programming Language C/ International Organization for
    Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission
    (ISO/IEC) 9899:1990 (E), Programming Language C
o   National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Federal
    Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 151-1
o   OSF Application Environment Specification, Operating System
Programming Interfaces Volume (AES/OS), Revision A
o   OSF Application Environment Specification, User Environment
    Volume (AES/UE), Revision B
o   SVID Issue 2 - Base and Kernel Extension
o   X/Open (4) Portability Guide Issue 3 (XPG3 (4)) -- Base and
    X/Open Transport Interface (XTI)
o   4.3 Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD)
o   Transmission Control Protocol (MIL-STD-1778), Internet Protocol
    Version 4 (MIL-STD-1777), SMTP (MIL-STD-1781), TELNET
    (MIL-STD-1782), FTP (MIL-STD-1780)
o   IEEE 802.3 Ethernet
o   IEEE 802.5 Token Ring
o   ANSI X3T9.5 Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI).
 (4) X/Open and XPG3 are trademarks of X/Open Company Limited in the
   United Kingdom and other countries.
Based on OSF/1 threads implementation, AIX/ESA supports
elements of the IEEE draft POSIX 1003.4 specification.  The OSF/1
threads implementation is based on the POSIX 1003.4a thread draft
standard.
AIX/ESA protects previous investments further by providing a
high degree of binary and data compatibility with AIX/370 and by
supporting A370FS, a file system format on AIX/ESA.  A370FS supports
file systems created on AIX/370 Version 1 Release 2 or later,
allowing AIX/370 users to benefit from AIX/ESA, without immediately
migrating data.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
AIX/ESA, building upon the OSF/1 base, provides improved systems
management capability over AIX/370.  Enhanced diagnostics, including
trace, stand-alone dump facilities, kernel error recovery, machine
error recovery, and an online dump viewing facility provide improved
reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS).
       AIX/ESA:
o   Enhances accounting function providing interval accounting for
utilization times rather than statistical accounting (traditional
UNIX), allowing the user to apportion costs with greater
    granularity.
o   Exploits OSF/1 design to support dynamic extensions of the kernel
-- Modules may be added for new drivers while the system is
running, without rebuilding the kernel, shutting down, and
    re-starting the system.
Running AIX/ESA natively on an ESA-capable processor, as
either a VM/XA SP Release 2.1 or VM/ESA guest, or in a PR/SM logical
partition (LPAR) provides configuration flexibility.
With improved service strategy, object code-maintained (OCM)
program temporary fixes (PTFs) may be selectively installed; the
system administrator need only install the PTF and its requisite
PTFs, if any.
Security -- AIX/ESA supports security functions and policies,
designed to meet the C2 level of criteria as defined in the
Department of Defense (DoD) Trusted Computer System Evaluation
Criteria, DoD 5200.28-STD.  Access control lists (ACLs) are not
included in this definition of security. Refer to Programming
Announcement 292-182, dated March 31, 1992, for future security
direction.
AIX/ESA has not been submitted for evaluation and IBM cannot
guarantee that an evaluation will be performed or a C2 rating
awarded.
AIX/ESA provides the following in addition to standard UNIX
security features:
o   Enhanced identification/authentication
o   Auditing of security-relevant events
o   Privilege
o   Command authorization
o   Security administration
o   Scaling enhancements
o   Objects cleared before reuse allowed.
AIX/ESA includes an authorization and least privilege
mechanisms which allow a more granular control of system
administration operations than traditional UNIX operating systems.

AIX/ESA supports an integrated Tape Management System (TMS)
consisting of an enhanced tape device driver and a tape manager.
o   AIX/ESA provides an enhanced tape device driver (which is part of
the AIX/ESA kernel) and miscellaneous system level enhancements
supporting a robust tape management interface.
o   Sceptre Corporation has agreed to provide a tape manager product
known as REELlibrarian (5) for AIX/ESA, planned to be available
in the second half of 1992.  REELlibrarian for AIX/ESA, which is
an enhanced version of Sceptre's current REELlibrarian product,
exploits the AIX/ESA tape management interface and provides an
integrated tape management system solution for customers.
In addition to the availability of the REELlibrarian for
AIX/ESA product, Sceptre has informed IBM of its intent to port their
current REELlibrarian product to the AIX/ESA platform.
Details on content, availability, pricing, and ordering
information for the Sceptre products can be obtained from Sceptre
Corporation, 3626 W. Liberty Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.  Contact Paul
Stutler, (313) 665-8778, FAX (313) 665-5707.

 (5) REELlibrarian is a trademark of Sceptre Corporation.
USER PRODUCTIVITY
AIX/ESA enhances user productivity through:
o   Complying with accepted standards which facilitate developing
    portable applications
o   Providing the vi, ed, and sed editors and debugging facilities,
    dbx and xde
o   Handling 8-bit single-byte American National Standard Code for
Information Interchange (ASCII) coded graphic character sets for
information interchange, and providing XPG3 base features for
internationalization. Among these features is a message facility
that allows program messages to be stored separately from the
    program source code.
AIX/ESA provides internationalization support as defined in
XPG3, ANSI X3.159, Programming Language C, and POSIX IEEE
Standard 1003.1.
To meet the requirements of local customs, AIX/ESA supports
such features as language-specific collating sequences, library
functions for character classification, date and time formats,
monetary formats, and numeric conventions.
AIX/ESA Version 2 Release 1 supports the IBM PC Code Set 850
or the ISO 8859/1 for Latin 1 Single Byte Character Sets (SBCS).
Both of these code sets have the same encoding as the portable
character set.  The portable character set for AIX/ESA consists of
the POSIX portable encoding according to ISO 646-International
Reference Version (IRV) ASCII.
The AIX/ESA library functions that perform character handling
(collation, classification, conversion) support either the IBM PC
Code Page 850 or the ISO 8859/1 encoding schemes in a manner that is
transparent to the utilities and applications that make use of the
library functions.
AIX/ESA Version 2 Release 1 supports the following attached
keyboards to the RS/6000 or the Personal System/2 (R) (PS2 (R)), by
means of telnet and remote login, for the supported code sets and
language combinations:
    Belgian (Dutch/French)
    Canadian-French
    Danish
    Finnish/Swedish
    French
    German
    Italian
    Norwegian
    Portuguese
    Swiss-French/German (French arrangement)
    Swiss-French/German (German arrangement)
    Spanish
    UK English
    US English
The Base Operating System (BOS) Install program allows the
user to set a system wide default locale environment for any of the
supported languages.  The default setting includes language,
territory, and code set.  The default locale environment information
is saved in the LANG environment variable so that licensed program
products (LPPs) that are subsequently installed on the system can
retrieve the information.
BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
With AIX/ESA's entry into the AIX family, the family continues as a
framework for building portable and scalable UNIX applications across
an unprecedented range of processors.  The result is a series of
offerings with a broad range of function, performance, capacity, and
price, enabling a customer to select and implement the most
appropriate solution for a variety of requirements while preserving a
common UNIX operating system environment.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
AIX/ESA is intended as a data server for general purpose computing
users, a compute server for scientific and technical computing users
executing numerically-intensive applications, and as an interactive
campus server.
AIX/ESA is intended for customers who have a requirement for a
stand-alone, large-scale UNIX operating system, or the
interoperability of UNIX workstations (IBM or other vendors) with a
large-scale UNIX operating system.
AIX/ESA does and will continue to provide UNIX standards
currency, interoperability, application portability, and scalability.
AIX/ESA operates natively on ESA/370 and ESA/390 processors,
in a PR/SM logical partition, or as a VM/ESA or VM/XA SP Release 2.1
guest.  Customers should be aware that the aforementioned guest
environments are different and they should verify that their
requirements are satisfied by the environment chosen.
AIX/ESA improves upon traditional UNIX systems management and
RAS.  It provides specialized server functions as a peer node on a
UNIX network such as, a file server utilizing increased data
bandwidth or as a high-speed compute server utilizing (optionally)
the Vector Facility.  Because the AIX family operates across a broad
range of machine platforms in the UNIX industry, customers may move
applications and data between larger and smaller systems as their
business needs change.
