The Strong National Museum of Play's International Center for the History of Electronic Games has acquired another great piece of video game history. Joel Billings, founder of Strategic Simulations, Inc. has donated a collection including company documents, source code, and games to the museum covering the period from the company's 1979 founding until its sale to Mindscape in 1994.

SSI is best remembered for its "gold box" series of games based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons franchise, which kicked off in 1988 with the release of Pool of Radiance.

Over the last several years, the museum has racked up some important collections, including one from Microsoft covering Windows and Xbox products, and a massive collection of Japanese video games.

For more on this extensive new addition to the museum's library, head over to its CHEGheads blog for the post from ICHEG director Jon-Paul C. Dyson.

<3 SSI. Many fond childhood memories (demon's winter, dragon wars, gold boxes, even Hillsfar!)

I hope the SSI D&D; games aren't held up in licensing hell. I would so buy all of the gold box games, Stronghold (no not that Stronghold, the SSI D&D; one), Al Qadim, Spelljammer, the Dark Sun games, the Ravenloft games, the Eye of the Beholder series etc... off Good Old Games. GoG already has a few SSI goodies on offer.

I know wizards were trying to regrab the rights for making new D&D; content. Place I was working at a couple years ago wanted to do some D&D; stuff for them (we had several avid D&Ders; on staff myself included). They strung us along for about a year, sent us a big box of goodies but we never got anything going.

The older stuff really shouldn't be all that hard. It's not like a GTA where you've got big buckets of licensed music.

Probably some of the best games I ever played. All the gold box, dragon lance, 25th century games. Pure gold.

I think I've been craving them for 20s now wanting more. Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Dragon's Age (Origins), all good fixes but not the same.
