Overview:

It's time for a new generation of pilots to take the helm!

After the Border Worlds conflict of Wing Commander 4, the galaxy breathes a sigh of relief for peace has come at last. The hero of the Confederation, Colonel Chris Blair, decides to transfer to the Naval Forces. The Confederation decides its time to retire some of the old guard to make room for new hotshot pilots. Lance Casey and his best friend Max Garrett are fresh-from-the-Academy rookies looking to make their mark on the TCS Midway. Just as they are getting comfortable, a distress call from their former enemy, the Kilrathi, makes what would seem a routine mission into something else entirely...

Wing Commander 5: Prophecy is the last in a long line of classic space combat simulators. You'll take on the role of Lance Casey as he performs dangerous missions for the Confederacy while on assignment on the TCS Midway. Engage in conversation via glorious late 90s FMV with your fellow crew mates. Match your wits and skill in space combat against an all-new alien threat whose coming was foretold by an ancient Kilrathi prophecy of the end of the universe. Arm yourself with a vast variety of death-dealing weaponry and fight back the enemy!

My first Wing Commander

Posted on 2013-11-07 06:27:09 byGODzillaGSPB's avatarGODzillaGSPB:

And yes I know, for that alone many here will despise me. But it is as it is. I've never had the opportunity to play the first four installments of Wing Commander, partly due to lack of a decent computer...or the lack of a computer at all. ;-)
That's why Prophecy was my first Wing Commander and even among the first space operas I played. Many followed.
Because it brought me toread more this genre, I have to vote it a full five stars. May Blair forgive me. :P

Good Game, but a Disappointing Ending One of PC Gaming's Best Series

Posted on 2013-11-07 22:36:51 bywwwolf's avatarwwwolf:

Wing Commander Prophecy (Okay, let's be honest and just call it WC5) is a good game. Is it the best in the series? I don't think so.
I grew up with Wing Commander. WC1 was the first PC game I played, and the series kept me upgrading my computer with each new release. Every game had its strengths and weaknesses, and so does WC5.
The overall game play is good. If you've playedread more one Wing Commander you've played them all -- there isn't much that can be improved. Talk to the crew, get a briefing, fly a mission. Rinse and repeat.
The movie sequences are good. They don't have the full CGI sets of WC3 or the shear star power of WC4, but they get the job done. Though they do seem to have a lower budget than the previous games.
The space flight is good too. I personally prefer the game engine of WC3/4, but the 3DFx smoothed graphics were cutting edge for their time. Definitely keep in mind that the engine will only look good with a 3DFx card or some GLIDE wrapper magic.
The storyline was heavily hyped at the time. It's... okay. I'm still a fan of the Kilrathi over the new enemy species. If not for the unresolved cliff hanger ending it might have even rated as good.
Over all, a good game and a good buy, but a disappointing ending to the wonderful Wing Commander series.

A decent 5th game, but a poor overall ending to the series

Posted on 2013-11-07 16:18:03 byDeadPoolX's avatarDeadPoolX:

The major problem with Prophecies is that it ends on a cliffhanger. Certain events take place during and near the end of the game, all of which were intended to be solved in the next installment. That never happened as Origin was shut down after EA purchased them.
If you can get passed that issue, then you'll find Prophecies to be a decent, if not enjoyable, fifth entry into theread more series. Story-wise, I didn't feel it was as good as the previous games, but in all fairness, much of this was due to playing a new character (we're no longer Colonel Blair) and the unresolved ending.
Visually, this game was leaps and bounds beyond the previous titles, at least during combat. I felt the video wasn't as good as the film used in WC4, but that's a personal preference.
Relating to the visuals, I will have to caution players that Prophecies was released back when 3DFx was considered the "king of video cards." Glide was 3DFx's proprietary API, which was superior to both Direct3D and OpenGL at the time.
In short, you'll end up using software rendering unless you either have an old computer with a working 3DFx card (which is unlikely) or you have a Glide wrapper handy.
Oh and although they're somewhat unusual today, I'd strongly recommend playing this game with a flight stick. Although you can do it with keyboard and mouse, I wouldn't recommend it. I don't know if there's a way to enable a gamepad to work, but if there is, that might serve as a decent substitute.
