What's cool about it:

  • Clive Owen, John Hurt, Christopher Walken, and David Warner are your guides through the seamy underworld of Privateer 2.
  • Explore and exploit the universe as you see fit - either as a peaceful trader or a battle-hardened mercenary.
  • Shady deals, deep space battles, and fast bucks are the standards you must live by if you're going to amass enough firepower and information to stand any chance of success.

Overview:

You regain consciousness and the unfamiliar faces surrounding you inform you that you've lost your ship in an unfortunate accident. The cutthroat world of the Tri-System privateers greets you with a clenched fist and a knife pointed at your back. Your only order of business is survival. You've got just enough credits to afford something resembling a new ship. It takes more than just a bucket of bolts to make it in this world; you'll need upgrades, and most important of all: money. The sector is brimming with "business" opportunities, but who can you trust? Legal or not, it's time to trade, travel, and battle your way through a place where high risk equals high reward and only those with the brass reap the rewards.

Privateer 2: The Darkening is the premier open universe space trading and combat sim. Blaze your own path through the Tri-System by either hook or crook. Take any mission you see fit, without rules or restrictions. Corner the market as you work out trade routes with the most reward. The universe is waiting for you, Privateer.

Woo hoo!

I disagree with Spoony on this one. I think the gameplay is absolutely spot on. Maybe I'm biased because this was the first open sand box style game I'd ever played, but I've since tried others from that era and before, and this one stands high. It is nothing short of awesome.
The only mild complaint I might have is that late into the game the missions may be a bit repetitive, read more however it takes a long time to get to that point because there are so many.
I think this game is well designed, and has the right mix of good game play and video cut scenes. The video portions are well acted and drive an interesting story line which of course you can choose to follow or completely ignore without consequence.
I still own the original dos CD's AND the later Windows 95 version CD's, with the printed manuals. I now also own the GOG version. THAT'S how cool this game is.
I could go on and on, but at this price, the game definitely worth owning and playing.

Dark Sci-Fi

Posted on 2013-09-19 11:15:04 byKnight_79's avatarKnight_79:

Privateer 2 is the type of game you only play for the story. The gameplay doesn’t reach the level of depth the original had. There is a lot of repetition in the missions and there really isn’t much to do in the game that will keep your interest except for the story. The writing is excellent and the FMV is done in a particular style that might not be for everyone. Theread more best thing I can compare the style to is older British Sci-Fi, similar to Blake’s 7 and some of the darker classic Doctor Who episodes. The tone of the story is dark and almost dreamlike at times. The game features a large cast of skilled actors such as Brian Blessed, John Hurt, Clive Owen, and Christopher Walken.
The quality of the Story is equivalent, to Wing Commander IV. However, WC4 improved upon the story presentation and gameplay of WC3. Privateer 2 surpasses the story of the original by leaps and bounds, but the gameplay take a step backwards, giving the game an unbalanced feel. If you’re looking for a well written, well acted, and stylistically filmed sci-fi drama, I highly recommend this game. If you’re expecting gameplay as engaging as the original, you’ll be disappointed.

One of the best - for me THE BEST!

First of all: THANKS SO MUCH GOG FOR BRING THIS GAME BACK!!!!!!!!!!
It's my always all time favorite Space Opera - Game. Played WC (III to V), Freespace I + II and some others.
But this game is the (to me) the perfect mix of story, trading, space-fighting and a beautiful art design (menus etc.)...
The strength is the mix!
Definitively a MUST HAVE!
