Weak WC title

Posted on 2013-08-27 15:09:51 byjbarnson's avatarjbarnson:

I remember writing this review in my head the day after I got this game back in '93. Which would be, like, twenty years ago tomorrow or something. This game was simply the WC 2 combat engine with a mission editor. Unfortunately, the mission editor wasn't very exciting, either. In a time when shareware editors allowed you to create some very complex and fascinating scenarios forread more X-Wing, this felt like a quick-and-dirty cash grab, thrown together in a month by a couple of interns.
And this is coming from a guy who just about worshiped the Wing Commander series.
Still, for the time, it was fun if you just wanted to try out some match-ups that you never actually got to see in the main game and expansions. I just don't see much of a point for it today, unless you are a completionist.

Less 'Academy' and more 'Simulator'

I used to play the heck out of all the Wing Commander games. Of this generation of Wing Commander games (WC2, Armada, Privateer) this is by far the weakest, but it did have it's charm. It's setup like a flight simulator: You specify what you will encounter, and then fly the mission. If you are intimately familiar with the ships you fight in WC2 or Armada, you may find this interestingread more from the 'what if I ran into ...' factor, but otherwise, you're probably better off replaying WC2.

A nice little game, but don't expect it to keep you entertained for more than an afternoon

I remember picking up Wing Commander Academy years ago. I was, and still am, in love with the series. That said, I don't quite understand the thought process that led to the creation of this game.
Don't get me wrong, it has the great WCII game engine, and all the ships, weapons, and combat that entails, but there is no plot. Zero, zilch, none.
The game consists of you layingread more out a very basic waypoint map, then fighting your way through it. That's all. The addition of the gauntlet mode is nice, but hardly enough to carry the game.
It's not a bad game, but feels more like an expansion pack to WCII than a stand alone product.
If you're looking for a minor diversion for an afternoon, or just to complete your Wing Commander collection, by all means grab it. Otherwise I'd start with one of the main Wing Commander Games (also on GOG) instead.
