I studied Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente and obtained my Masters of Science degree in 1992. My thesis was titled "Jump linear quadratic Gaussian control under regime uncertainties" and was completed during a final graduation project at NLR. During 1992-1994 I studied at Eindhoven University of Technology and obtained a Master of Technological Design (MTD) degree in Mathematics for Industry. The graduation project was executed at Railned, the independent organisation for railway safety. The MTD thesis was titled "Judging the stability of train timetables".

From October 1994 I am an employee at NLR, where I have been working on developing stochastic dynamic models as basis for insight and safety analysis of enhancements in air transport operations. Part of these developments are a stochastically and dynamically coloured Petri net (SDCPN) formalism and a method for bias and uncertainty assessment in risk models. In June 2010 I obtained my PhD degree, while working at NLR. The PhD thesis is titled "Compositional modelling using Petri nets with the analysis power of stochastic hybrid processes" and is available at http://www.nlr-atsi.nl/eCache/ATS/15/060.pdf.

Currently, I am a senior scientist at NLR's Aerospace Operations Safety Institute, where I work on developing safety methods to address future air transport operations that involve multiple stakeholders. Another accomplishment is a database that collects and characterises more than 800 methods used for safety analysis in various safety-critical industries; this Safety Methods Database is regularly updated and is available at http://www.nlr.nl/documents/flyers/SATdb.pdf.

I spend my free time as a volunteer for athletics club Tempo A.V.. I am part of the executive board as secretary, am the coordinator of club judges, maintain the list of club athletics records, and can often be found on the field as a judge.
