Promoting the development of info-communications in Africa
About us
The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) was founded in 1977 as a specialized agency of the Organization of African Unity, now African Union, in the field of telecommunications. ATU took its present name in 1999. This led to the transformation of the agency into a partnership between public and private stakeholders in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector. ATU provides a forum for stakeholders involved in ICT to formulate effective policies and strategies aimed at improving access to information infrastructure and services. In addition, the Union represents the interests of its members at global decision-making conferences and promotes initiatives aimed at integrating regional markets, attracting investment into ICT infrastructure, and building institutional and human capacity. The mission of the Union is to accelerate the development of the telecommunications/ICTs in Africa in order to achieve digital economies. The Union envisions an Africa that is empowered as an inclusive information society with strong digital economies for sustainable social, economic and environmental development in Africa. ATU’s core activity programmes include; Internal Institutional Capacity, Support by Key Institutions and Strategic Partnerships. ATU currently has 48 Member States drawn from Governments and 54 Associate Members from within and outside the African region.

At the invitation of INCM - Autoridade Reguladora das Comunicações - Mozambique’s Communications Regulatory Authority - we were chanced to #engage with stakeholders in the #ICT and #telecommunications sector during the very vital National Communications Conference in Maputo. ATU Secretary General, Mr. John Omo, encouraged players in the sector to adopt standards that ensure Africa does not become the dumping ground for technologies that are obsolete or have failed elsewhere. “The increasing mound of electronic wastes is a concern worldwide. We must adopt #environmentally_friendly recycling technologies and disposal systems, and work with other authorities to ensure that Africa is not a dumping ground,” said Mr. Omo.

This afternoon, we formalized an MoU with the Communication Regulators' Association of Southern Africa (CRASA). We have committed to working together to tackle shared challenges within our respective mandates, aiming to enhance policies and regulatory frameworks. Our mutual objective is to advance regional (within SADC Secretariat) and continental goals in the telecommunications and ICT sector.

Delighted to welcome Dr. Lamenya Margret, Director of Corporate Affairs with the South Sudan National Communication Authority (NCA) - NCA, and her team. Their fact-finding mission at the Communications Authority of Kenya led them to our doorstep, and we were thrilled to extend our warmest welcome. As our newest member, this courtesy call was an excellent opportunity to share the ATU mission and discuss issues of mutual interest. Looking forward to fruitful collaborations ahead! #SouthSudan #BuildingConnections

Yesterday, discussions between ICANN staff Bob Ochieng and today's meeting with Ms. Frida Nchoka and Ms. Hilda Barasa from the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, explored diverse collaboration prospects. During the ICANN meeting with the ATU-African Telecommunications Union Secretary-General, John Omo, the urgency to boost digital connectivity across Africa topped the table, aligning with ICANN's objective of ensuring a stable and secure global internet and ATU's mission to advance ICT development on the continent. The engagement with the Blair Institute noted the potential of Universal Service Funds (USFs) and data collection which we agreed hold the promise for Africa's digital future.
