Questions about OT and IoT[edit]

How does OT correlate to the Internet of Things (IoT). Are OT enabled assets the participants of the IoT? I assume that the previous is true if (and only if) we connect the OT to the internet. If we use a closed network then we have a simply a second network with OT enabled assets. Correct?

These are good questions that are related to the subject of the article. Unfortunately, they do not specifically address changes to the made to this article, so it's unlikely anyone will answer them here. My Gussie (talk) 11:36, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OT[edit]

How do you distinguish Operational Technology from Cybernetics and Industrial Automation? Methinks OT is a fairly recent term. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dan Oom (talkcontribs) 16:19, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the term has only come into common usage in the last 5 years or so. Because Gartner has defined it and many others use it, I believe it is notable enough to need an article. Are you interested in collaborating to improve the article? My Gussie (talk) 11:39, 13 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

IT > OT: OT is already part of IT, it's a sub amount[edit]

Because even if we monitor through sensors, in the end data is created to evaluate by computers and those are then the decision makers through a FSM of some sort (very simplistic AI, or rather AC: Artificial Controller). Those decisions are then send to certain hardware to process: E.g. run motor to close gate.

That has of course has operational influence. But so has IT in general already - IT had from the beginning influence on business processes, through IoT on hardware, too.

But I personally see no difference between IT and OT, OT is just an sub amount of it, focused on hardware.

Imho formed during the clash of engineers vs computer scientists. DigitalCandyMan (talk) 08:40, 14 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
