Abstract

This paper describes a framework for software-based networking in smart factories (SF) that enables them to easily adapt the communication network to changing requirements. Similar to cloud-based systems, such SFs could be seen as production clusters that could be rented and configured as needed. The SF network utilizes software-defined networking (SDN) combined with network functions virtualization (NFV) in order to achieve the required flexibility. This paper presents and discusses our vision of a network architecture for SFs based on SDN and network virtualization in order to support smart services especially for Industrie 4.0. Despite the fact that the technology is nowadays not yet ready for deployment in today's manufacturing networks, we present a framework for software-defined factory networks and discuss possible challenges and benefits.

Zusammenfassung

Dieser Beitrag erläutert das Konzept Software-basierter Netzwerke für intelligente Fabriken (Smart Factories, SF). Die vorgestellte Architektur verfolgt das Ziel, SFs eine einfache Anpassung der Kommunikationsnetze an sich ändernde Anforderungen zu ermöglichen. SFs könnten, ähnlich wie cloudbasierte Systeme, als Produktionscluster aufgefasst werden, welche nach Bedarf angemietet und konfiguriert werden. Die hierzu erforderliche Flexibilität von SF-Netzwerken wird durch den Einsatz von Software-defined Networking (SDN) in Kombination mit Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) ermöglicht. In diesem Beitrag wird unsere Vision einer Netzwerkarchitektur für SFs vorgestellt und diskutiert. Auf der Basis von SDN und Netzwerkvirtualisierung soll diese Architektur internetbasierte Dienstleistungsmodelle (Smart Services), insbesondere für Industrie 4.0, ermöglichen. Obwohl die genannte Technologie, zum aktuellen Zeitpunkt, noch nicht für einen Einsatz in Produktionsnetzen bereit ist, stellen wir ein Konzept für Software-definierte Netzwerke für SFs vor und erörtern mögliche Vorteile, aber auch Herausforderungen.
