  1. It is really unfortunate that the Request for travel support funding for 5 participants to attend IGF 2011 in Nairobi on behalf of AFRALO has not been approved.

This request was made after careful consideration to the importance of outreach activities for both AFRALO and ICANN in general. After the success that we have been able to share with the whole ICANN community following our participation in last IGF Meeting in Vilnius, it was most appropriate that our participation was renewed in IGF Nairobi.

We still feel that participation in events outside ICANN Meetings gives us much more visibility and it helps us reach a broader number of Internet Users. The only way that we can achieve our target of one ALS per country is by broader participation, thinking outside the abode of ICANN.

Henceforth, we urge that in the preparation of future budgets, this element is taken into consideration and that appropriate funding is allocated to attend such events.

  2. From Fatimata Seye Sylla:

Yes Dave, we will keep on requesting for these local capacity building activities.  We have only one ICANN meeting in an African country every two years and if we have to wait for those meetings to reach out for new ALS, we don't know how many years it will take us to recruit 54 ALS.   In Dakar, we will undertake several capacity building activities prior to the meeting.

This will build awareness and knowledge about ICANN activities among the youth, the academy and other internet users in Senegal.  If we succeed in getting sponsors and conducting these activities, we will share this initiative with other developing countries.  This will also give us an idea about the real cost of these workshops.

Regarding the ICANN meeting in Dakar itself, I really appreciate the step forward taken by ICANN to allow 6 more travel supports.  Let's keep on defending our ideas and seeking for more support.
