New and updated third-party DevOps integrations for Google Chat, including PagerDuty

Apps such as Google Cloud Build, Asana, GitHub, Jenkins and more, have been updated with new functionality:

Using Slash commands for quick actions such as creating a new Asana task or triggering a build in Jenkins or Google Cloud Build.
Ability to use Dialogs for important flows such as setting up the app, or entering detailed info such as creating a GitHub issue.

Operations and incident response professionals can use the new PagerDuty integration to take action on PagerDuty incidents from Chat. From Chat, you’ll be able to:
Receive notifications of PagerDuty incidents right from Google Chat.
Take action, including acknowledging and resolving incidents without leaving the conversation.

We hope these additional third-party integrations within Chat help you collaborate and get work done faster by eliminating the need to switch between various apps and browser tabs.

We plan to introduce the ability to create dedicated spaces to collaborate with teammates on important incidents to resolve them quickly, with the right people. We will provide an update on the Workspace Updates blog when that functionality becomes available.

Getting started

Admins: In the Admin Console, you can specify which applications your users can install from the Google Workspace Marketplace.
End users: If allowed by your admin, you’ll be able to install Google Chat apps using the “New chat” button in Google Chat . The apps you install will appear in the Google Chat conversation list.

Users who have the relevant add-ons installed will be able to attach files from these sources to a Calendar event, and attendees can view the event with the attachment on the web or on mobile.

Getting started

Developers: You can now develop add-ons that support attaching files from sources other than Google Drive. To get started, learn more about extending Calendar with Google Workspace add-ons and adding attachments with a callback function.
Admins: There is no admin control for this feature. Visit the Help Center to learn more about managing Google Workspace Marketplace apps.
End users: If allowed by your admin, you’ll be able to install a Calendar add-on using the “+” button in the quick access side panel or via the Google Workspace Marketplace. End users need to install a compatible add-on to enable this feature.

Quick summary Google Workspace developers can now create Google Workspace add-ons that attach files to a Google Calendar event from any third-party service. This feature enables developers to create add-ons that support attachments from a wide range of sources beyond Google Drive, such as digital whiteboard, content creation, or file management tools.

Users who have the relevant add-ons installed will be able to attach files from these sources to a Calendar event, and attendees can view the event with the attachment on the web or on mobile.

New updates Unless otherwise indicated, the features below are fully launched or in the process of rolling out (rollouts should take no more than 15 business days to complete), launching to both Rapid and Scheduled Release at the same time (if not, each stage of rollout should take no more than 15 business days to complete), and available to all Google Workspace and G Suite customers.
New Categories in Google Workspace Marketplace
Three manually curated categories have been added to the Google Workspace Marketplace: Business essentials, Work from everywhere, and Apps to discover. A left navigation menu will be included to show new categories.

You'll notice new categories in the Google Workspace Marketplace, which allows users to sort through specific categories to find relevant add-ons.

Getting started

Admins: Visit the Help Center to learn more about managing Google Workspace Marketplace Apps for your organization. If you allow your users to install any app from the Marketplace, the “Approved for you” section will be hidden.
End users: To view applications in the Marketplace approved by your admin, visit the “Approved for you” section of the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Compose actions in Gmail Add-ons make it easy to add links and attachments from apps like Box, Dropbox, Atlassian’s Jira, and Egnyte to any Gmail message—right as you’re drafting it. We’re launching Compose actions to G Suite customers today with those four partners (plus more on the way). See our post on the G Suite blog for more details.

Gmail Add-ons with compose actions can be installed from the G Suite Marketplace. Like all other Gmail Add-ons, G Suite admins can install them for their entire domain or add them to their whitelist.

Gmail contextual gadgets going away on August 1st, 2018

On August 1st, 2018, we’re planning to shut down all Gmail contextual gadgets. A Gmail contextual gadget is a gadget that is triggered by clues in Gmail, like the content of a subject line or an email message.

We recently launched Gmail Add-ons, which satisfy many of the same needs as Gmail contextual gadgets but also offer a better developer experience, cross-platform support, and more stability. We recommend that admins turn off their contextual gadgets and develop new or install existing Gmail Add-ons to serve their use cases. If Gmail contextual gadgets aren’t removed before August 1st, 2018, they’ll disappear automatically.

Install Gmail Add-ons for your entire domain

In addition, we’re making it easier for developers to design Gmail Add-ons specifically for their organizations. In the coming weeks, developers in your domain will notice two changes:

They’ll be able to install Gmail Add-ons for their own G Suite accounts before they’re published, to aid in the development process. Previously, this was limited to their personal Gmail accounts.

They’ll be able to publish Gmail Add-ons to users in their own G Suite domains. In addition, they'll be able to publish to the general public, after requesting and receiving publication permission.

Stay tuned to the G Suite Developers Blog to learn more about these two developer capabilities and when they’ve launched.

These new features make it easier for users to take advantage of Gmail Add-ons and breeze through their email-related action items—without ever leaving Gmail.

We recently launched Gmail Add-ons, which allow you to work with your favorite business apps—directly from Gmail. To make it super easy for users to access these helpful tools, we’ve now made it possible for G Suite admins to install Gmail Add-ons for their entire domains. To install an Add-on, click the Settings gear icon in Gmail and select “Get add-ons.” For additional info, see the Help Center.

For Administrators: Please note that the Developer Preview only allows the developer to test add-on development in their own Gmail accounts. End-user functionality is not planned until later this year.
